About Joseph
From a young age, I took music lessons that were rigid and heavily focused on sight-reading and music theory.
Unsurprisingly, I eventually quit.
Shortly after, I picked up a ukulele and began experimenting freely with different sounds and styles. Before long, I was able to play my favorite songs by ear.
As my passion for music grew, I expanded to the guitar and piano. The freedom of playing without sheet music was a liberating experience unlike anything I had felt before. Over time, I learned to play multiple genres, from folk and jazz to classical.
After years of relying on my ear, I returned to sight-reading and music theory. To my surprise, the concepts that had once frustrated and discouraged me now made much more sense.
My musical journey was anything but conventional, but I believe that is what led to my success. Traditional music education can often frustrate students, making them feel as though they lack musical ability. However, music is a deeply personal experience, and there should never be a one-size-fits-all approach.
My mission is to help my students uncover their natural musical abilities in a way that works best for them.
When I'm not teaching, I love performing at a variety of venues, from weddings to farmers' markets.
